April Selections

1) Dillon Francis – Say Less ft G-Eazy

While Dillon Francis is without a doubt the funniest celeb to follow on snapchat, he’s also pretty damn good at producing music too. His latest offering sees him team up with Canadian rapper G-Eazy for his rambunctious new single ‘Say Less’, which serves as the follow up to 2016’sAnywhere’ ft Will Heard. A collaboration a long time in the making, G-Eazy goes in bar after bar with his slick flows and sharp lyrics, even giving Gerald the Piñata a shout out. Mix that with Dillon’s bouncy, bass-riddled trap production and you have one epic track. ‘Say Less’ is available via Dillon’s own IDGAFOS imprint (I don’t give a fuck or shit) – a term which originated from his 2011 song of the same name and was later expanded into his successful merch collection. Having recently completed Coachella Festival, upcoming dates for Francis include a string of Las Vegas performances including Surrender, Intrigue and Encore Beach Club. G-Eazy fans can catch him at Open’er Festival in Poland (June 28- July 1) and Splash! Festival in Germany (July 6-9).

2) Blaenavon – Lonely Side

Indie trio Blaenavon (Ben Gregory, Frank Wright and Harris McMillan) shared their new track ‘Lonely Side‘. The single is taken from their debut album That’s Your Lot and premiered as MistaJam’s Hottest Record on Radio 1. ‘Lonely Side’ is quite a personal track and serves up a glistening slice of indie pop with its smooth guitar riffs and flourishing synths.  Currently on a sold out headline tour, upcoming dates for the Hampshire trio include O2 London (June 16) and Reading & Leeds Festival (Aug 25-27)

3) Shy FX – We Just Don’t Care ft Shingai Shoniwa

UK Producer Shy FX (Andre Williams) dropped his latest single ‘We Just Don’t Care’ featuring the incredible vocals of Shingai Shoniwa (Noisettes). The Jungle and bass producer showcases his diverse and eclectic range, effortlessly blending tribal, percussive beats and bass heavy vibes. The innovative producer has always championed new sounds, having previously joined forces with Chase & Status, David Rodigan and MC Rage in 2014 to form soundsystem Rebel Sound, and ultimately winning the Red Bull Culture Clash. Having recently signed to Insanity Records, upcoming dates for Shy FX include Reading & Leeds Festival (Aug 25-27)

4) The xx – A Violent Noise (Four Tet Remix)

Four Tet (Kieran Hebden) dropped a new remix of ‘A Violent Noise’, taken from The xx’s third studio album ‘I See You’. While the original offered up a much sparser track, Four Tet has once again worked his production skills serving up a more house-driven dynamic that’s double the length. The blissful track is taken to new euphoric heights with its swelling synths and rolling percussion. Four Tet is a long time collaborator with The xx, having previously taken on remix duties for ‘VCR’, ‘Angels’ and ‘Seesaw’. Four Tet recently performed at Coachella Festival. No word yet on UK dates, but stay tuned.

5) I Win – Lethal Bizzle ft Skepta

Lethal Bizzle unveiled his new single ‘I Win’ featuring fellow Grime MC, Skepta. Produced by Skepta himself, the Grime duo serve up a hard-hitting banger filled with intense horns and a fast pace energy. With plenty of bravado from their respective verses, the Grime heavyweights trade bars and deliver plenty of energy throughout.  ‘I Win’ is taken from Bizzle’s forthcoming project titled ‘You’ll Never Make a Million From Grime’. The EP is set to feature collaborations with Donaeo, Mostack, and Melissa Steel. Upcoming performances for Bizzle include Reading & Leeds (Aug 25-27) and O2 Academy Oxford (Oct 19), while Skepta is set to perform at London’s Wireless Festival (July 7-9)

6) Gorillaz – Ascension ft Vince Staples (Nic Fanciulli Remix)

Klaxon Alert!!! Grammy-nominated producer Nic Fanciulli has taken on remix duties for Gorillaz ‘Ascension’, taking the track to epic new heights. Having received critical acclaim for his collection of memorable remixes over the years, including last year’s reworking of Jamie xx’s ‘See Saw, ‘Ascension’ sees Fanciulli deliver an acidic slice of rhythmic tech-house, bursting with energy. Upcoming dates for Fanciulli include a Thursday night residency in Hï Ibiza, alongside Luciano, Steve Lawler, Joris Voorn & Kölsch! (June 8-Sept 28).

7) Gorillaz – Saturnz Barz ft Popcaan (Banx and Ranx Remix)

Ok, while we’re on the topic of Gorillaz, we might as well continue with another remix. I featured the original song in last month’s selections, taken from their fifth studio album Humanz, but couldn’t resist adding this incredible remix from Montreal-based production duo Banx & Ranx. Known for their reggae inspired music, the duo deliver a mellow dancehall takeover, extending upon the original and infusing tropical vibes throughout.

8) Leftfield – Open Up (Skream Remix)

Leftfield, originally made up of progressive house duo Neil Barnes and Paul Delaney, were highly influential in the 90’s with their evolution of dance music. Since going solo, Barnes has taken his Leftfield DJ set around the world and is reissuing his first album Leftism after 22 years, along with a host of reworks from the likes of Zomby,Voiski, Hodge & Peverelist and Skream. Sampling the original vocals of John Lydon on ‘Open Up’, electronic music producer, Skream, of pioneering dubstep duo Skream and Benga, delivers a haunting reworking of the track filled with surging synth lines, propelling the track to exciting new heights. While Leftfield is set to head out on tour with Leftism from May 11-May 26, Skream is set to perform at Parklife (June 10-11) and Glastonbury (June 21-25). The reissue of ‘Leftism is set for release May 5, while Skream’s remix is available now via Hard Hands.

9) Lana Del Ray – Lust For Life (Ft The Weeknd)

Lana Del Rey and The Weeknd have joined forces for ‘Lust For Life’, the title track from Lana’s forthcoming fifth studio album. This is the third time the pair have collaborated together, with Lana featuring on two tracks from his 2016’s Starboy album, and ‘Prisoners from The Weeknd’s 2015 album Beauty Behind the Madness. ‘Lust for Life’ premiered with MistaJam on Radio 1 and serves up a dreamy pop ballad, with Lana’s wistful vocals and Abel Tesfaye’s shimmering falsetto working in perfect harmony amidst a backdrop of swirling synths, keys and atmospheric production. No word yet on an album release date, but stay tuned for more details. Update: Lust For Life is set for release July 21 via Polydor. Upcoming dates for Lana include Lollapalooza in Paris (July 22)  while The Weeknd is set to perform at London’s Wireless Festival (July 7-9)

10) MØ – Nights With You

I last featured MØ in my January selections for her collaboration with Snakehips on ‘Don’t Leave’. Now, the Danish popstar is back with her new single ‘Nights With You’, taken from her forthcoming untitled sophomore album and follow up to 2014’s No Mythologies. Co-written by pop heavyweights Ryan Tedder and Benny Blanco, ‘Nights With You’ perfectly captures MØ’s emotive vocals and rousing vocal hook. Upcoming dates for MØ include Pinkpop Festival in Netherlands (June 3-5)

11) Toddla T – Beast ft Andrea Martin & Stefflon Don

Producer/DJ and 1Xtra host Toddla T, unveiled his new single ‘Beast’, featuring R&B singer/songwriter Andrea Martin and rising MC Stefflon Don. Taken from his long-awaited LP titled Foreign Light , ‘Beast’ premiered as MistaJam’s Hottest Record. The single serves up the perfect balance between Andrea’s lush vocals and Stefflon Don’s commanding, killer verse, all working alongside Toddla’s slick production and infectious beats. The Sheffield-born producer and champion of bass, bounce and carnival vibes, is set to release Foreign Light July 28 via his new label ‘Steeze’. In the meantime, catch Toddla T every Thursday on his 1Xtra show and also performing at Parklife Festival (June 10-11) and Fabric (Aug 11)

12) Mason – Rhino

Dutch DJ and producer Iason Chronis, AKA Mason, unveiled his appropriately named beast of a track, ‘Rhino’. With its stomping brass, groovy house production and fierce vocals from Dyanna Fearon, Rhino packs a punch and delivers on all fronts. Rhino sees Mason partner up with Defected Records for his latest release and serves as the follow up to ‘Toucan’ and 2016’s Nite Rite series. ‘Rhino’ is available now and will no doubt be tearing up dancefloors this Summer.

13) Alex Metric – Freeek

London-based DJ Alex Metric, shared his latest track ‘Freeek’ ft Confessionals. The single is taken from HOWSLA’s forthcoming house-music compilation album, curated by Chris Lake and OWSLA boss Skrillex. The compilation showcases house music producers pushing boundaries and creating exciting, new music. Alex Metric, an already established name on the OWSLA label, delivers a stirring electro banger, with whirring synths and an infectious groove throughout.  In the lead up to the album release on May 5th, OWSLA will also be holding weekly HOWSLA-themed parties at Le Jardin in Hollywood. In the meantime Freeek is available now.

14) London Grammar – Oh Woman Oh Man

Fresh from the success of recent singles ‘Big Picture’ and ‘Rooting For You’, London Grammar unveiled their latest single ‘Oh Woman Oh Man’ produced by Paul Epworth. Taken from their forthcoming sophomore album, Truth Is A Beautiful Thing, the single perfectly captures Hannah Reid’s lush vocals, Dan Rothman’s hazy guitars and Dot Major’s ethereal synth and percussive work. London Grammar have enlisted esteemed British film director, Tony Kaye, to capture the visual soundscape of Oh Woman Oh Man. Trust Is A Beautiful Thing is set for release June 9th via Metal & Dust/Ministry of Sound. Be sure to catch the trio on the Festival circuit this Summer (Parklife, Glastonbury, TRNSMT, as well as headline performances at London’s Eventim Apollo (Oct 21) O2 Academy Brixton (Oct 30).

15) Francis Novotny – Between The Lines

Francis Novotny, shared his new single ‘Between The Lines’. The Gothenburg (via Paris) singer/producer and multi-instrumentalist, serves up a brass-heavy, electro banger, showcasing a wide range of styles from R&B to electro soul and even glitch-hop. Mix that with soulful vocals, pulsing beats and swelling synths and it’s safe to say, Novotny is pushing down musical boundaries and creating something quite unique all together.  With similarities being drawn to SOHN and Hudson Mohawke, this is definitely one artist to keep an eye on.  ‘Between The Lines’ EP is available now via Black Butter Records and features previous singles ‘Friendzone’ and Hit & Run’.

16) Novo Amor – Carry You

So while the majority of my monthly selections this month have been quite ravy, I thought it best to end on a more mellow number and what a beauty this one is. Welsh singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Ali Lacey, AKA Novo Amor, unveiled his stunning new single ‘Carry You’. The single is taken from Novo Amor’s forthcoming Bathing Beach EP, set for release May 26th via Believe Music and serves up an enchanting and achingly beautiful melody, perfectly complimented by layers of delicate instrumentation and Novo Amor’s emotive, falsetto vocals.  In a recent Facebook post, Novo Amor commented that ‘Carry You’ is “an expression of nostalgia and a  wistful nod to a certain period of time”. Upcoming dates for Novo Amor include Bitterzoet in Amsterdam (Sept 19)

Yogi – Christian Bale Ft. Casey Veggies, Knytro, Sway, KSI, Raptor

You may remember Yogi’s monstrous single ‘Christian Bale‘ which made my ‘Top Tracks of 2013‘. The London trio, currently signed to Skrillex’s OWSLA label, has been given the instrumental track a reworking and now features the vocals of Odd Future’s Casey Veggies as well as Knytro, Sway, KSI and Raptor.

The added vocals ramps up the track and gives it more intensity with their slick spitting skills, delivering an absolute beast of a track. Listen out for the clever ‘Dark Knight‘ and ‘American Hustle’ references. Having just signed a production contract with Dre’s ‘Aftermath Entertainment’ expect exciting things from Yogi.

The reworking of Christian Bale serves as the follow up to the massive Pusha T collaboration on ‘Burrial’ and is available now.

While February is the shortest month of the year, it was jam-packed with exciting new music news and releases. All eyes were on London for the 34th Brit awards which saw Arctic Monkeys sweep the board, not to mention Alex Turner’s ‘interesting’ speech. The NME Awards Shows with Austin Texas took place and further headliners for summer festivals were announced including Dolly Parton and Blondie for Glastonbury, Arctic Monkeys for Reading&Leeds and T in the Park, Avicci and Calvin Harris for Creamfields and so much more… roll on summer! If that wasn’t enough, Oasis announced their 20th anniversary reissue of ‘Definitely Maybe’, ‘What’s The Story Morning Glory’ and ‘Be Here Now’, we heard new music from Todd Terje and Irish group Villagers provided an alternative song for Sochi. Prince continued his secret gigs around London and Tinie Tempah high-fived Prince William at the Baftas…. and breathe.

Now in March we look forward to the iconic SXSW festival in Austin Texas, the Winter Music Conference in Miami  and another exciting month of music. Check out my February picks below with over 60 minutes for your listening pleasure

1) Major Lazer – Aerosol Can

Major Lazer premiered their new single ‘Aerosol Can‘ featuring ‘man of the moment’ Pharell Williams. Pharrell, who recently debuted his second album ‘Girls showcases his rapid rap skills over a minimal percussive beat and delivers an infectious, uptempo and fun track!

The dance-hall crew recently unveiled their new five-track EP ‘Apocalypse Soon’  via Mad Decent, featuring a host of special guests from Pharrell Williams to Sean Paul, RDX & Moska. Be sure to catch Major Lazer at Bestival this year and Pharrell at Coachella and Wireless Festival.



2) Klaxons – There Is No Other Time (Prod Gorgon City)

British indie rockers Klaxons have unveiled their new single, ‘There Is No Other Time’. The highly anticipated single premiered on BBC Radio 1 with  Zane Lowe and serves as the first new material to surface since their 2010 album ‘Surfing The Void’. Produced by Gorgon City, who brought us ‘Ready for Your Love’  ft MNEK, ‘There Is No Other Time’ is the first single to be taken from their forthcoming third album ‘Love Frequency’ due this June.

 Be sure to catch Klaxons at Reading & Leeds festival this summer.



3) Hozier – from Eden

With the massive success of last years ‘Take Me To Church’, Irish singer/songwriter Hozier (Andrew Byrne) unveiled his new single ‘From Eden’. Once again, Hozier delivers a soulful and emotive track with sweeping vocals and plenty of rhythm and blues. A festival favourite this year, Hozier is set to perform at Reading and Leeds as well as SXSW in Austin Texas and Longitude in Dublin. ‘From Eden’ is taken from Hoziers four-track EP of the same name and is available from iTunes now.



4) Iggy Azalea ft Charlie XCX – Fancy

Feisty Aussie rapper Iggy Azalea, has unveiled her latest collaboration with British alt-pop singer Charlie XCX. ‘Fancy’ serves as the follow up to previous singles such as ‘Change Your Life’, ’Bounce’ and ‘Work’ and premiered with MistaJam on BBC Radio 1. With production from Invisible Men and the Arcade, ‘Fancy’ delivers an infectious driving beat with it’s looped synths, Charlie’s ‘hands in the air’ hook and Iggy’s swagger-filled rap flow.

‘Fancy’ is set for release April 6th and is set to be taken from Iggy’s forthcoming debut album ‘The New Classic’, due later this year. Be sure to check out their ‘Clueless’ inspired video as well as upcoming performances for Iggy at Wireless and Charlie XCX at SXSW.



5) Dillon Francis & DJ Snake – Get Low

Dillon Francis and DJ Snake have teamed up for ‘Get Low’; a monster of a track encompassing a hefty mix of Moombahton, electro, trap and even Arabian influences.  Having both achieved successful solo careers with singles such as DJ Snake’s ‘Bird Machine’, ‘Turn Down For What’ and Dillon’s epic ‘Masta Blasta’ and ‘Without You’ ft TEED. ‘Get Low’ serves up an explosion of Dillon’s trademark Moombahton roots while DJ Snake brings the big room bass.

‘Get Low’ is available from iTunes now. The duo are joining Skrillex on his ‘Mothership Tour’ kicking off in the US end of May.



6) Panteros666 – Baby F-16 (Original and Cause & Affect Remix)

French producer Panteros666 (AKA Victor Watel and one quarter of Club Cheval), is already in good company with fellow Bromance Records label mates, Gessaffelstein and Brodinski. With the success of the incredibly infectious ‘Baby F-16’, the single has now been reworked by house duo Cause & Affect and delivers a bass heavy beast with distorted and echoed vocals. Be sure to catch the duo at one of their many upcoming gigs.



7) Martin Garrix & Firebeatz – Helicopter

Having already released massive dance anthems from ‘Animals’ to ‘Wizard’,  17 year old Martin Garrix has done it again! Garrix unveiled his latest single ‘Helicopter’ with Dutch duo Firebeatz via Spinnin Records. Helicopter delivers an anticipating build, infectious synths and an incredible drop sure to cause a stir. With massive support from fellow DJ’s on the circuit, Garrix seems unstoppable! Upcoming performances include SXSW and Future Music Festival.



8) Royal Blood – Little Monsters

Royal Blood made up of Mike Kerr (bass, vocals) and Ben Thatcher (drums) from Brighton, are another act to emerge from the ever successful BBC Introducing. Having started off the year with a nomination for BBC’s Sound of 2014 poll, the rising rockers premiered their new single ‘Little Monsters’ with Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1.

Little Monsters serves as the follow up to their debut single ‘Out of the Black’, which was released on the band’s own label Black Mammoth Records. Their riff-laden power rock has drawn comparisons to artists such as The Black Keys, The White Stripes and Queens of the Stone Age, so it’s no surprise the duo are gearing up to support Arctic Monkeys this May. Further dates include NME Awards Tour with Interpol, Temples and Circa Waves kicking off March 18th and Reading and Leeds festival.



9) Little Dragon – Klapp Klapp

Swedish pop group Little Dragon unveiled their new single ‘Klapp Klapp’, taken from their forthcoming fourth studio album ‘Nabuma Rubberband’. The synth-pop quartet deliver a groove laden vibe with quirky rhythms and deep synths, while Yukimi Nagano’s alluring and warm vocals soar above. Be sure to check out the two videos for ’Klapp Klapp’ which sees ‘Nabil’ take on creative duties, as he did for Kanye West and Frank Ocean.

Nabuma Rubberband, is set for release May 12th via Because Music.  Pre-order the album on iTunes and receive Klapp Klapp as a free download. Upcoming performances included supporting Foxes, and dates at Coachella and Secret Garden Party.



10) Sohn – Artifice

London, now Vienna based producer Sohn,  previously produced for artists such as Banks, Disclosure, Kwabs and Angel Haze. Now, Sohn is gearing up for his debut album ‘Tremors’, due April 7th with lead single ‘Artifice’. The single premiered with Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1 as his Hottest Record and serves up a fresh track filled with electronic textures, layered synths and Sohn’s captivating vocals delivering an infectious chorus.

Upcoming gigs include London’s Village Underground April 17th, before embarking upon  a 16 date tour of North America this May.



11) Jungle – Busy Earnin’

Mystery duo Jungle made up of T and J, have steadily built up their fanbase with their electro-tinged, tribal funk vibes. Their new single ‘Busy Earnin’ serves as the follow up to previous single ‘The Heat’ and ‘Platoon’ which received its premiere with Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1. ‘Busy Earnin’ oozes swagger with it’s feel good vibes, sparkling synths and soulful falsetto vocals mixed with some brass instrumentation –  The perfect summer festival soundtrack.

With a debut album set for release in 2014 via XLRecordings, be sure to catch the duo at The Oval Space, London on May 23rd and Reading and Leeds festival this summer.



12) Grum – Tears

Leeds producer Grum premiered his new single ‘Tears’ with Annie Mac on BBC Radio 1 and serves as the follow up to ‘The Theme’. The shimmering synth heavy track gradually builds to a euphoric big room house smash, drawing comparisons to Eric Prydz with his progressive dance style. Mix that with a throwback to some 90’s rave and disco influences and you’re in for one gem of a track.

Grum’s highly anticipated second album ‘Human Touch’ is due April 14th while ‘Tears is set for release April 7th via Heartbeats.



13) Glass Animals – Gooey

Oxfordshire Indie-pop quartet Glass Animals unveiled their new single ‘Gooey’, produced by fellow band member Dave Bayley and award winning producer Paul Epworth (Foster The People & Florence And The Machine)

‘Gooey’ presents a dreamy and intricate track bursting with energy and a perfect blend of psych-pop. The shimmering falsetto vocals create a beautifully atmospheric and serene track.

Gooey is available to download now, while their debut album is expected later this year via Paul Epworth‘s new Wolf Tone label. Upcoming performance from Glass Animals include SXSW in Austin Texas and 3 dates in Australia.



14) Deep Dish – Quincy

Deep Dish are back! The legendary progressive house duo, made up of Sharam and Dubfire, unveiled their new single ‘Quincy‘, which premiered as Pete Tong’s Essential New Tune. With an impressive back catalogue of tracks such as ‘Say Hello’, ‘Thank You’, ‘Flashdance‘, and ‘Dreams‘, ‘Quincy‘ is the first new material to surface since their 2005 album ‘George Is On‘, before later disbanding in 2006 to persue solo careers.

Deep Dish delivers an exciting and deeply layered progressive single. With its pulsating bass lines, soft synths and dark house vibes, ‘Quincy’ lures you into a comforting trance-like state of mind that you never want to end.

Set for release March 31st, upcoming performance include headlining the Ice Palace as part of the Winter Music Conference in Miami



15) Henry Fong – Stand Up

Get ready for an absolute banger of a track! Henry Fong has unveiled his new single ‘Stand Up‘ which received its release through none other than Skrillex’s label OWSLA.

‘Stand Up’ delivers a monstrous electro anthem with some punchy brass elements, hefty bass and some insane drops. With his style encompassing big room progressive house, trap and hip hop, Fong is on course for an exciting 2014.

The ‘Stand Up’ EP features massive remixes from Milo & Otis, Destructo, and DallasK and is available now.



16 – A$AP Rocky Ft Gesaffelstein – In Distress

Forthcoming scifi film ‘Divergent’ has gathered an all star lineup for its official soundtrack including Ellie Goulding, Banks, Skrillex, Tame Impala, Kendrick Lamar, Chance the Rapper and M83. The latest addition includes the exciting collaboration of US rapper A$AP Rocky with French Dj/producer Gesaffelstein (Aleph, Kanye- ‘Yeezus‘).

In Distress‘ perfectly captures the futuristic vibe of the film with Gesaffelstein’s intense and industrial sounding production. Though not a typical beat for A$AP, he nevertheless displays his effortless rap skills as he lets loose amidst Gesaffelsteins heavy electro based production.

Divergent hits cinemas April 4th while the official soundtrack is available now.

17) The Horrors – I See You

The Horrors announced their forthcoming fourth LP ‘Luminous’ which serves as the follow up to 2011′s ‘Skying’. ‘I See you’ premiered with Zane lowe on Radio 1 and delivers almost 8 minutes of psychedelic, ambient rock with its synth driven melody that gradually builds to an anthemic crescendo.

Calvin Harris & Dillon Francis – Here 2 China (feat. Dizzee Rascal)

There doesn’t seem to be any stopping Calvin Harris these days. Having just secured a number 1 album on Sunday with ’18 Months‘, the Scottish producer has teamed up with fellow DJ & producer Dillon Francis (Masta Blasta, Bootleg Fireworks (Burning Up), to co-produce their new single ‘Here 2 China‘.

Dillon Francis – a rising LA producer championing Moonbahton and Trap, is currently on his ‘Wet & Reckless’ tour with Baauer, Flosstradamus and Clockwork. Having previously released his work through multiple labels, including Skrillex’s OWSLA, Francis has worked closely with the likes of Diplo, Jack Beats and Steve Aoki.

Completing the triple threat line-up, is the one and only Dizzee Rascal, who returns to form as he adds a bit of Grime to this bass heavy trap anthem.
