June Selections

1) Denney Vs Mekon – What’s Going On

Word of warning, this song will make you want to go out #raving! UK Producer/DJ Denney from Leeds, unveiled his new single ‘What’s Going On’. The single served as Pete Tong’s Essential New Tune, as well as Danny Howard’s Hottest Record while filling in for Annie Mac the past few months. As one of the leading figures in the house scene right now, ‘What’s Going On’ serves up some pulsing bass, thrilling drum patterns and an infectious vocal sample from Mekon’s ‘00 hit of the same name, featuring the vibrant vocals of Roxanne Shanté. With the breakout success of ‘Low Frequency’ two years ago, Denney has gone from strength to strength with a string of releases via Hot Creations and Crosstown Rebels. Speaking with Danny Howard, Denney spoke about hounding Mekon for the original vocals and working on the track the past four years: “I must have done four or five different versions but it wasn’t right. I finally revisited it last year, and here we are”. With a summer of touring, festivals, Ibiza gigs and further Summer releases ahead – watch this space for an official release.

2) Lorde – Perfect Places

With the release of her sophomore album, Melodrama, Lorde unveiled her latest single, ‘Perfect Places’. Having previously shared ‘Green Light’, ‘Liability’, and ‘Sober’, ‘Perfect Places’ serves up Lorde’s trademark anthemic choruses, whirring synths and unique sense of synaesthesia (seeing sounds as colour). Produced and co-written alongside Jack Antonoff (Fun, Sia, Taylor Swift), Lorde captures emotion like no other and serves up some darker undertones, with its throbbing syncopated rhythm, infused with sleek R&B stylings. Throughout ‘Perfect Places‘, Lorde suggests partying as a mechanism for survival and the bold extents people go to, in order to feel more alive. “All the nights spent off our faces / Trying to find these perfect places / What the fuck are perfect places anyway?”. Fresh off the success of her Glastonbury debut performance on the Other Stage last weekend, with ‘Green Light’ featuring as the BBC TV coverage intro music each day, Lorde is set to go on tour this Autumn with 5 UK performances including O2 Apollo in Manchester (26 Sept), London’s Alexandra Palace (Sept 27) and Glasgow’s O2 Academy (2nd October) – unfortunately no Irish dates announced yet.

4) Grace Carter – Silence

Time to slow the pace down a bit with the stunning vocals of Grace Carter. Ok, so this track might have been released end of May, but I’m sneaking it into my June favourites (Shhh!) The 19-year-old singer/songwriter from Brighton, delivers a confident debut with a personal, yet defiant message. The track premiered as Zane Lowe’s ‘World Record’ on Beats Radio, where Grace commented: “I feel it’s quite relatable, and just excited for other people to find some strength in the song, like I did”. 5) Duke Dumont x Gorgon City – Real Life Ft Naations

I feel like you can always count on house music aficionado, Duke Dumont (Adam George Dyment) and North London production duo Gorgon City (Kye Gibbon & Matt Robson-Scott), to produce instant dance-floor bangers. With a string of hits between them including ‘Need U (100%) ft A*M*E’, ‘Won’t Look Back’, ‘Ready For Your Love’ ft MNEK and ‘Saving My Life’ ft RØMANS – ‘Real Life’ is no exception. Teaming up with rising Australian duo Naations (Nat Dunn & Nicky Routledge) for an infectious slice of 90’s house, ‘Real Life’ is filled with delectable, soulful vocals and infectious house-piano melodies. With Duke Dumont recently offering his production skills to Katy Perry’s ‘Swish Swish’ ft Nicki Minaj, Duke continues to highlight his crossover skills from underground club culture to more mainstream pop stylings. With Dumont and Gorgon City set to take up residency this summer at Amnesia in Ibiza, all three acts are set to perform at SW4 Festival in Clapham, London. (Aug 25-27).

Now the 20-year-old singer is back with her latest offering, ‘Teenage Fantasy’, serving as the follow up to last year’s Project 11 EP along with singles ‘Beautiful Little Fools’ and her collaboration with Kali Uchis on ‘Tyrant’. With ‘Teenage Fantasy’, Jorja’s stunning neo-soul vocals float effortlessly above some laid-back jazz accompaniment, all the while delivering a mesmerising ballad and a mature sound far beyond her years (oh, and an ending that’s completely charming). Brimming with talent, Jorja recently featured on Drake’s More Life ‘playlist/project’ with tracks ‘Jorja Interlude’ and ‘Get It Together’, further emphasising her global reach. Again, a bit of an end of May release, but sneaking this gem into my June picks. German Deep house production duo, Tube & Berger (Arndt Rörig and Marco Vidoviz), unveiled their latest single ‘Dust Feel’. Featuring the captivating vocals of long time collaborator Richard Judge (‘Disarray’, ‘Ruckus’, ‘Wide Awake’), ‘Dust Feel’ serves up an enchanting slice of progressive deep-house with its moody undertones and hypnotising, atmospheric synths. 8) Calvin Harris – Feels Ft. Pharrell Williams, Katy Perry & Big Sean

Ok, I think we’ve found our song of the Summer and unsurprisingly, it comes from Calvin Harris with an assist from Pharrell, Katy Perry and & Big Sean. ‘Feels’ is an effortlessly cool, sun-drenched single, with its tropical vibes, funky bass-lines and breezy vocal hooks. This is the fourth single to be taken from Calvin’s forthcoming album, Funk Wav Bounces Vol 1, and follows previously released singles ‘Slide’ ft Frank Ocean & Migos, ‘Heatstroke’ ft Pharrell, Young Thug and Ariana Grande, and ‘Rolling’ ft Future and Khalid. With a never ending list of contributors, Calvin has recently come under fire from Canadian Producer, Deadmau5, who criticised the amount of high profile guest artists: “Anyone ever remember when calvin harris was just… calvin harris?”. The Scottish producer is also a multi-instrumentalist, playing all the instruments on the record – further promoting his never ending talents. Be sure to check out the hyper-stylised, psychedelic video.

The single premiered with Annie Mac as her Hottest Record and serves up an infectious samba sizzler, with its vibrant house piano, bustling percussion and bouncy, Carnival vibes. 12) Confidence Man – Boyfriend (Repeat- Edit)

Not much is know about this next group, other than they’ve just shared a ridiculously catchy Mark Ralph edit of their single ‘Boyfriend (Repeat)’. Confidence Man are an Australian four-piece group, a supergroup if you will, made up of former members of The Belligerents, the Jungle Giants and Moses Gunn Collective. They also have some of the best names around – Reggie Goodchild, Clarence McGuffie, Janet Planet and Sugar Bones. While Mark Ralph is a UK producer having worked with the likes of Hot Natured, Jamie Jones and Hot Chip. The preppy, electro-funk tune just oozes charm with its funky bass lines, swirling synths, quirky electronic flourishes and sassy vocals to match. With Huw Stephens recently commenting ‘I can’t emphasise how brilliant they are’ and just ‘so much fun live’, this is one track you’re going to have on repeat for quite some time – so ‘Get Down!’ Having just headlined The Moth Club in London, keep an eye out for future dates from the Brisbane supergroup, including a live session from Maida Vale Studios with Huw Stephens.

Last, but by no means least, is Newcastle producer Cristoph with his new single ‘Feel’. Duke Dumont: For Club Play Only, Pt. 3

artworks-000084907723-1r4k43-t500x500

House music is constantly gaining momentum and dominating mainstream music. Duke Dumont certainly owes a lot to this, especially considering the success of his previous singles ‘Need You (100%)’, ‘I Got you’ and Won’t Look Back‘.

Before this whirlwind of success, Dumont was making waves on the underground scene and released two volumes of ‘For Club Play Only‘ via Tiga’s Turbo Recordings, so it’s only natural Dumont releases a third volume.

For Club Play Only‘ part 3 features four original tracks, allowing Dumont to return to his roots and deliver a darker and more stripped back underground vibe. Two personal standout tracks include: ‘Slow Dance’; a guaranteed floor-filler with it’s sinister yet hypnotising synths, distorted vocals and acid style vibes, while ‘Nicht Vor Mitternacht‘, delivers an all out big room romper with its sinister synth dominating throughout. ‘Mumble Man‘ and ‘Drumapella‘ complete the 4 track EP.

For Club Play Only, Pt. 3‘ is available now. Upcoming dates for Dumont include The Warehouse Project.

What a month June has been for music. We had the wonderful return of Jessie Ware with her new single ‘Tough Love‘, not to mention new music from Duke Dumont, Jamie xx, Porter Robinson and the reworking of Yogi’s ‘Christian Bale’. Festival season got well under way with Parklife and Isle of Wight but it was Glastonbury Festival that took center stage this month, with headliners Arcade Fire, Metallica and Kasabian thrilling audiences, not to mention fan favourite Dolly Parton. It’s safe to say Glastonbury Festival went down a ‘storm’ … excuse the pun. Yes even the weather took center stage which interrupted Rudimental’s set and briefly closed the Pyramid stage. What would a festival be without a bit of rain, mud and an electrical storm? Roll on next year! Catch up on the highlights here.

The official charts saw a bit of a shake up with streaming sites such as Spotify, Deezer and Napster to count towards Official Chart rankings for the first time. The home of the Official Chart, yes Radio 1, has also seen a bit of a shake up. Longtime broadcaster Edith Boman,  Rob Da Bank, Jen Long and Ally McCrae are among some of the presenters axed from the schedule (Sad times!). This has paved the way for exciting new changes, such as an evening new music show with Huw Stevens, B Traits joining the Friday night dance lineup, while Annie Mac and Pete Tong’s shows have been increased by an hour. #Raving. Read the rest of the changes here.  The BBC also announced details of their new BBC Music Awards, set to take place in Earls Court Dec 11th and hosted by Chris Evans and Fearne Cotton.

Itunes UK celebrated their 10th anniversary this month. To mark the occasion, they released the all time best selling albums and singles, which included Adele’s ’21’, Ed Sheeran and Emeli Sande, while Robin Thicke’s ‘Blurred Lines’ topped the best selling single. When Zane Lowe isn’t conducting incredible interviews on Radio 1, such as the recent Rick Rubin feature interview, he’s announcing an exciting new music show on MTV called ‘Soundchain’, which is set to feature artists from Ed Sheeran, Queens Of The Stoneage, Chase and Status and Kasbian. Speaking of which, Kasabian announced their UK and Ireland tour starting this Autumn. If that wasn’t enough, there’s plenty of new music releases lined up such as new music from Rudimental tipped by end of the year, Florence and the Machines third album, new Snow Patrol in 2015, a debut album from Hozier in September and even more Haim greatness in the pipeline. Oh and incase you’re not aware, June 10th has officially being named ‘Drake Day’ by the Mayor of Houston ….put it in the diary!

July surely has to be dubbed ‘Festival Month’ with a whole host of Festivals lined up including, Wireless, Festibelly, British Summer Time Festival, Latitude, Longitude, LoveBox, Eminem at Wembley, T In The Park and even G In the Park. Last but not least, don’t forget the continuation of Annie Mac’s Superstar Djs on Channel 4.

Ok, now on with the music. Check out my selections below:

1) Calvin Harris – Summer (Diplo & Grandtheft remix)

What better way to kick off June favourites than with the aptly titled track ‘Summer‘ from Calvin Harris with Diplo and Grandtheft  on the remix. This is the second collaboration from the duo having previously remixed Calvin’s ‘Sweet Nothing‘ ft Florence. While retaining Calvin’s original idea, the two drops allow the heavyweights trademarks to shine from their tantalising trap vibes, grime-heavy bass lines, defined percussive beats and some intermittent bed squeaks … always keeping it interesting. Be sure to catch Diplo pretty much touring everywhere this summer, while Grandtheft is currently on his ‘Keep it 100’ tour. The ‘Summer‘ remixes are available here.

Recorded in his bedroom, ‘Elevator Song’ opens the collection of work. The purely instrumental track takes us away for 3 minutes to a place of pure tranquility with simple piano and strings. If only all elevator rides were as blissful as as this. ‘Elevator Song’ is available now from his ‘Romantic Works‘ album.

Dreads delivers some serious skills and spitting over the impeccably produced beats from Preditah. You might remember Preditah from some of his incredible remixes from Danny Brown’s ‘Dip‘ to Disclosure’s ‘Stimulation‘, and now he’s done it again with the infectious trap-hop hooks dominating ‘You See Me‘. Dreads and Preditah prove to be an exciting collaboration. ‘You See Me’ is set for release July 21st and is available to pre order now.

Duke Dumont – Won’t Look Back

image

Duke Dumont unveiled his new single ‘Won’t Look Back‘.

A year after “Need You (100%)” ft A*M*E reached number one in the charts, Dumont followed this with equally infectious “I Got You” ft Jax Jones, securing him yet another number one single. ‘Won’t Look Back’ looks to follow in the same path, as it serves up some vibey house piano, deep house and a throwback to the 90s rave scene with its infectious powehouse vocals.

The single premiered as Zane Lowe’s Hottest Record where Dumont commented on how the track was written really quickly: “I knew the vibe I wanted to go with“. The Grammy nominated producer also gave some advice to upcoming producers: “Get stuck into remixes. It gives you the best education; this is what it takes to make a good record.”

Currently working on his debut LP, due later this year/early next year, ‘Won’t Look Back’  is set for release August 22nd via his own Blase Boys Club label/Virgin EMI. Pre-order your copy here. Upcoming dates for Dumont include Lovebox, Global Gathering, Lollapalooza and Creamfields.

Lovebox – Top Picks for Friday

Lovebox_header_1

Lovebox Festival returns to Victoria Park tomorrow with an eclectic line-up spanning across 3 days (19-21st July). Headlining the Friday is the one and only Azealia Banks, fresh off her Glastonbury set where she premiered her new single ‘ATM Jam’ ft Pharrell. With a whole host of amazing acts set to kick off Day 1 of Lovebox, here are some of my top picks for Friday:

  1. First on the list has to be the Queen of Dance Annie Mac, making her highly anticipated return since embracing Motherhood. Annie is regarded as the Gatekeeper of Radio 1, kicking off the weekend with her #raving #behaving vibes and closing it on a Sunday night with the mellow #musicalhotwaterbottle. Annie will no doubt deliver one hell of a set having already geared us up for Summer with her free ‘Sunshine Mix‘. Welcome back Annie!
  2. DJ & producer Julio Bashmore was responsible for one of the most infectious house tracks of 2012 with ‘Au Seve‘, which he released under his very own label, ‘Broadwalk Records‘. Previous production credits have included Jessie Ware’s ‘110%‘ and ‘Imagine It Was Us‘. Having made his debut at Coachella festival this year, followed by a killer set at Field Day, expect plenty of ‘Bashmore Bass’ during his extended Lovebox set.
  3. Breach, aka Ben Westbeech, is responsible for arguably one of the summers hottest house records; ‘Jack’. Originally released through Dirtybird and most recently through Atlantic, Breach sure knows how to produce a hit record, having previously written Redlight’s infectious ‘Get Out My Head‘. Expect a big crowd for Breach as he makes his Lovebox debut.
  4. Festival favourites Rudimental are set to cause a stir with their electric live show with crowd pleasing anthems such as ‘Waiting All Night‘ ft Ella Eyre, their new single ‘Right Here‘ ft Foxes and the song that started it all ‘Feel The Love‘ ft fellow Lovebox artist John Newman. With their debut album reaching no 1, Rudimental are sure to receive a massive reception as the crowd soak up the quartets electro summer vibes.
  5. My final top pick comes from the brilliant Duke Dumont who brought us the chart topping ‘Need You’ (100%) ft AME. Having just released ‘Hold On‘ ft Mnek as the highly anticipated follow up, expect a debut album to drop shortly through Blase Boys Club . Be sure to check out his recently released ‘Hard Summer Mixtape‘, as well as the stunning remix of Haim’s ‘Falling‘.

With so many amazing acts kicking of Day 1 of Lovebox, it’s impossible to narrow down my top picks. Notable mentions have to go to Mele, Lulu James, John Talabot, Monki, Amplify Dot, Artwork, SBTRKT DJ Set, Ruen Brothers and Toddla T, all of which I’ll definitely be checking out and highly recommend. Thankfully the weather looks to be pretty hot again, so Wiley’s track ‘Heatwave’ should be pretty apt for his set tomorrow. Check out the full Friday lineup here.
